Hi,
I have an old ASUS A8V DELUXE ( socket 939 ) motherboard with a
lost CPU fan.
I have the CPU fan retention bracket.............. but not the 2 screws
that attach the bracket to the motherboard!
Can anyone please give me the length, and the type of screw thread.....
or perhaps a place where I might purchase another bracket with screws
included?

Take the bracket to a hardware store, including the
backplate, and try a few screws they have there in the loose
screw bins. The length should be obvious once you have
found the screw thread pitch and diameter needed, then add a
little bit more length (about 3-4mm) to account for the
board being between the front and back of the bracket.

I can give you specs on the screws I have in a different
Asus skt 939 board, which are likely the same as yours, but
I can't guarantee they are the same so I suggest taking the
parts to the hardware store even if you try the size I
mention first. The bracket on that board is black and Lotes
brand.

size 6-32
length 7/8"

Since 7/8" is far less common than 1" length, and since the
motherboard is more than 1/8" away from the motherboard
plane because it's on standoffs of some sort, you should be
able to use 1" length screws without any problem but 1-1/4"
is probably too long. 3/4" length would probably work too
because on this bracket the backplate has the long tapped
portions which the screw mate with, so losing only 1/8" of
threading shouldn't be a problem.

Had a similar experience with the 1/4" bolts in the bulk bin at Home Depot,
too. Barely start to torque the nut on and it turns to butter.

It's doubtful this will be much of a problem, because you
can't torque the plastic frame much anyway or it'll deform
and/or crack. I don't recall if the bolts were stainless
but were either that or high nickele content, they didn't
look heat treated.
